Most of our personal history is inherited from our folks at some point, though mostly over dinners or lunches and other family gatherings. Some of the time it’s embarrassing, like when your folks bring out the pics of you with an afro as a kid or the buckteeth you rocked in Sub. A (Grade 1). Apart from these, there are other events in your life that can only be related to you by your parents, things you don’t know or were too young to remember.
At the office party the other day, a colleague mentioned that he was born on a farm in the Eastern Cape. He mentioned the name of the farm and it’s approximate location, relevant to other common landmarks and towns. Even though I don’t remember what they were right now, I do recall thinking about this and how it applied to me. What was my personal history?
Well, I was born in Medi-Park hospital (now, Medi-Clinic, located in the CBD), in Cape Town on a Tuesday at just after 6am in the morning on the 26th day of July in 1977. My parents were living in a suburb on the Cape Flats called Surrey Estate which is a small neighbourhood just outside Athlone along Klipfontein road…
Do you know where you were born? I’d like to know… Why not post it in the comments? Or send me an email.

I was born in Jo’burg’s General Hospital (It was still decent back then) on Good Friday at around 11pm on the 5th of April 1985. Interesting/gross information: I swallowed mucous during birth so they had to shove tubes up my nose and into my lungs so that I could breathe.
My parents were staying in a house in Alberton along with my older brother
I was born in Joburg Gen, too! Born 14th May 1979, just after midnight. was almost born on Mother’s Day. Almost. I was also almost a 10 lb baby. Almost.
My parents lived in Birchleigh North. My mother was a SAHM and my Dad worked his butt off as a jnr. Med Tech at the time.
My parents lived in Tokai at the time; Blue Route Mall was nearing completion. They’d moved out of a house in Constantia and downgraded since my dad was trying to raise enough capital to start his own textile business out in Atlantis - and hence the move to Table View (at a time when most of Table View was bush!) back at the end of 1983 when I was 3 years old.
Not sure of the exact time that I was born, but the date was 21 February 1980, making me Pisces. I was my parent’s third son, and was born at Kingsbury Nursing Home (now Kingsbury Hospital) in Claremont.
DOB = 22 April ‘80, at the Frere Hospital, East London (Eastern Cape). As far as I know, I think I was a morning baby, still do love the mornings to this day. Still remember the house I grew up in, I spent 15years there. Most of my youth, spent playing around in the bush opposite my house, building camps or playing find and seek. AH - Good Times!!
Awesome, thanks for the response guys… very interesting indeed… These are things that we wouldn’t typically ask about each other but it does provide a unique insight into the people we are… Please, do keep them coming.
Hello! Great story!
